The city of Prague is filled with spectacular architecture. It is also pocket friendly. From the charming old town, to the romantic charles bridge, to the stunning Prague castle, to the numerous viewpoints overlooking the city, this city is a must visit. We have listed down a list of things to do in Prague that we recommend which would make your experience even better. We hope that this list helps you plan your visit better.
LIST
1. VISIT THE PRAGUE CASTLE
The Prague castle isn’t like the typical castle. It consists of many separate building, gardens, government offices and churches. The castle is located on top of a hill and is thus visible from most parts of the city. This castle dates back to the 9th century and it’s a delight for all the history and architecture buffs.
As the castle consists of many buildings, there are many things to do here with different entrance fees. The best things to do here include:
St. Vitus Cathedral: The Gothic architecture of this cathedral is just stunning. Inside the cathedral, you’ll find rows of stained-glass windows which create a whole rainbow of colors that are reflected all over the interior which is really magnificent. Remember the cathedral closes at 4:30 p.m.
Golden Lane: This lane used to house the castle guards in 16th century and goldsmiths in the 17th century. F. Kafka (one of the most renowned artists of his time) lived in one of the houses in this lane for a brief period. The entrance is for €10, however, if you want to save the money go after 5:00 p.m. when it’s free.
Daliborka Tower: This tower is located at end of Golden Lane. It was used as a prison from the end of 15th century to 18th century.
Rosenburg Palace: This palace was built by the Rosenburg family dating back to 1545 as their home. It has a very fascinating history and eye-pleasing interiors. Must see for history buffs and architecture lovers.
I suggest taking a tour to understand history better. Most of the guided tours start at approx € 30. One of the cheaper options for a guided tour is the Walking Tour organised by Sandeman’s, they are amazing and pocket friendly costing approx €15. For more information and ticket booking, click here.
2. HEAD TO PETRIN LOOKOUT TOWER FOR AN BREATHTAKING VIEW OF PRAGUE
It’s a sight to behold. The river, bridges and houses- all of Prague in one frame and it gets even better at sunrise or sunset.
This iconic lookout tower is situated on top of Petrin Hill. To get to the top of this hill, you can either take convenient funicular or hike for around 30-minutes. Once at the hill, you will see the lookout tower which looks like the Eiffel Tower. Again, you can climb the 299 steps up to the tower top or take the elevator. This is rated as one of the Best Places to Visit In Prague for a breathtaking view.
While you are on top of the Petrin hill don’t miss the Mirror maze. It’s quite fun. For more information and ticket booking, please visit the official website.
3. STROLL ACROSS THE ICONIC CHARLES BRIDGE
Lively musicians playing music, painters making caricatures and sketches, couples putting locking their love on the sides of the bridge is what will sum up your stroll across the famous Charles Bridge. From the moment you step on the bridge to the time you step off you will be surrounded by art in the form of paintings, sculpture and music.
I found the entire place to be very lively especially in the evening. With the entire vibe is so amazing, a couple of hours here would just fly by.
I agree that it’s crowded with tourists but it’s totally worth visiting at least once. You don’t need to go out of your way to cross the Charles bridge. No matter how you plan your itinerary, you are sure to cross it at least once during your stay.
Tip:
Go either during sunrise or post-sunset, it gets really crowded otherwise.
Most people miss it but you can actually climb up the tower on either side of Charles bridge. I suggest you climb at the one towards the castle for an amazing view of the river and the city. The entry ticket is around € 4.
4. VISIT ONE OF THE MOST UNUSUAL CEMETERY IN THE WORLD: OLD JEWISH CEMETERY
Does not sound like something you will want to see on a vacation, but trust me, it’s worth a stroll, especially if you learn the history behind it.
Here’s the history: decades ago, Prague had a sizable Jewish population. Unfortunately, they were concentrated to a very small part of the city and given a cramped space for a cemetery. As per the orthodox Jewish traditions, remains of a deceased could not be moved once the burial ceremony was performed. As the last resort, the Jews buried the deceased one on top of the other and moved the headstones. There are now thousands of tombstones at the cemetery which is in the center of Prague’s Jewish Quarter. This is what makes this iconic cemetery worth a visit during your time in Prague.
5. GET THE VIBE OF PRAGUE AT OLD TOWN SQUARE
All of Prague’s best in one place. It’s a beautiful, historic area with ancient buildings in different styles.
The Square hosts beautiful statutes and two Gothic-style churches. The Old Town Hall is something you shouldn’t miss. The hall has a beautiful tower which offers an amazing view of the city.
Check out the Astronomical clock which is the world’s oldest operating astronomical clock. You can see 12 apostles passing through the window every. Make sure to get there at least 5-10 minutes above to get a good spot for photos (honestly, it’s really overrated).
I hate touristy places, they are crowded and often miss out on the authentic feel. The Old Town Square is no exception but, we have found a few hidden places on the square that you will love.
Pauseteria: It is a cute little cafe that serves authentic Czech coffee.
Bistro Na Nove Radnici: It is a superb place to get a snack, dessert or a meal. The best part is that it’s really cheap (the main dish is about €4) but it doesn’t compromise on the quality at all.
Kafe Damu: is a cafe where you will find students from the nearby acting schools. though this cafe is situated on an expensive street, it’s really budget-friendly for eg. a pint of beer at Kafe Damu is 4 times cheaper than at a mini-mart across the street.
6. GET ARTISTIC AT THE JOHN LENNON WALL
This is definitely one of the quirkiest/artistic graffiti walls in Prague. It’s not a boring graffiti wall, the John Lennon wall is filled with a lot of inspired art. Someone interest in that era of music must definitely stop by. Feel free to carry your spray paint and get artistic.
This is one place you must visit each time you go to Prague as it is constantly changing with new art added.
7. GET SLOSHED AT THE PRAGUE BEER TOUR
If you didn’t have a beer in Prague, did you even visit it? Beer is what the locals drink instead of water, I am not even kidding. The best way to explore this city’s beer scene is by signing up for a beer tour.
We signed up for a 3-hour beer tour. Great local bar food to soak up the unlimited beer. Even if you are not a beer person, it’s worth the vibe and experience.
There are various tour operators who organize these tours. The cost depends on how long the tour generally is. Ideally, it costs around 50 € for a 3-hour tour with unlimited beer.
There are many cool bars in this city. If you wish to just skip the tour and explore places on your own, here is a list of the cool bars that you must try yo drink like the locals
Beer Geek: They have over 30 beers on tap and you will find beers here that you won’t find anywhere in the world
U Flaeku: They are serving beer since 1499. You must try the dark lather here. The vibe is amazing, sit in a garden kinda set up with local musicians playing mellow music.
U Medvidku: This place serves one of the strongest beers in the world. This place is in a mall so it isn’t my top pick but may interest those looking to try the strongest beer.
Pipa Beer Story: They serve 150 kinds of beers and it’s definitely worth a visit.
T-Anker Sunny Terrace: Saving the best for the last. This is perfect for a crazy view of the city at sunset with a beer.
8. CRUISE ON THE VLTAVA RIVER
Cannot miss this!!! Sign up for a ride-along Prague’s riverside and under the multiple bridges including the Charles Bridge and Prague castle. This is one of the most beautiful ways to see all the highlights of the city.
There are plenty of ticket booths throughout the city that sell tickets for various cruises throughout the day. There are multiple cruise options and the cost is based on what you chose i.e. cruise, cruise with drink or cruise with dinner and drinks.
Cruises run the whole day. I personally loved the evening cruises when the city is all lit up, it’s a sight to behold!
9. VISIT THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LIBRARY IN THE WORLD AT CLEMENTINUM COMPLEX
Clementinum is one of the most historic areas in the city and the main attraction here is the Library!
The Library here is considered the most beautiful library in the world with amazing baroque interiors. The tallest tower in the complex is used as the Astronomical tower with displays showing how scientists researched back in the days.
One thing you must note is that you can only go here with a guide. So don’t forget to book yourself a guide before you go.
10. Get the vibe of the city at Wenceslas Square
Wenceslas Square is probably the most buzzing pedestrian area in the city.
Though it is situated in the new town, there are many significant historic buildings here. for all those interested in a little history lesson check out the Czech National Museum and the New National Museum.
You will find shops, bars, restaurants and lots more here. This is the most vibrant part of the city.
If you wish to have coffee go to Literarni Kavarna Academia, it’s a bookstore with a cafe. Pick a book and head to the terrace for a coffee with a view of the Square.
11. PARTY IN PRAGUE
Prague has a great nightlife. Most of the clubs are situated on Dlouha Street. Someone suggested me to go to Karlovy Lazne, which is a huge, uber-famous club but personally I did not like it as much – trashy drinks, crowd, vibe, everything.
Here is a list of clubs that I visited and absolutely loved
James Dean Club
Kozicka
M1 Club
Harleys Bar – Best pick if you want to go dancing
Roxy
Anonymous Bar – The best drinks are served here. The bartenders here are amazing, they will enchant you with some amazing skills and drinks.
Tips
If you are drunk, you will find local tricycle-kinda-vehicles that will take you from one place to another. That way you are not drinking and driving.
The only place where you can get food at 7 am after a great night out is Burrito Loco
Remember it’s illegal to drink in a public place in Prague.
12. MANIFESTO MARKET FLORENC
I’m sure a lot of you will be interested in trying out local food and discovering the food scene in this amazing city. This one’s for you.
Modern- stylish- eco-friendly marketplace built to serve as a quirky food court. This is not your regular food market, they decorate it beautifully in every season. When we visited they had a beautiful igloo set up which was really amazing.
Walk from one culinary experience to the other with multiple popular local food joints. Though there are other markets this is my personal favourite market/places to visit In Prague
Tips
This is one of the first cashless places in Europe so please carry appropriate currency.
Please check the opening hours before you go as the timings keep changing based on the season.
